Beranda/Siap Kerja US: Bahasa Inggris, Portofolio & Melamar

Interview Behavioral & Metode STAR

Modul 6 dari 105 menit bacaBehavioral Interviews

Isi modul

    Konsep inti

    Metode STAR

STAR adalah kerangka untuk menyusun cerita:

Panjang ideal satu jawaban sekitar 1,5-2,5 menit saat diucapkan. Gunakan "I", bukan "we", untuk bagian Action. Interviewer ingin tahu kontribusimu, bukan kontribusi tim. Menyebut tim tetap boleh, tapi jelaskan peranmu.

    Pertanyaan behavioral yang paling umum

    1. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate or manager.
    2. Tell me about a time you failed or made a mistake.
    3. Describe a project you're most proud of.
    4. Tell me about a time you had a tight deadline.
    5. Tell me about a time you had to learn something quickly.
    6. Describe a situation where requirements were unclear.
    7. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate or mentored someone.
    8. Tell me about a time you received critical feedback.
    9. Describe a time you improved a process.
    10. Tell me about a time you worked with someone difficult.

    Menyiapkan bank cerita (6-8 cerita)

Buat tabel: baris = cerita, kolom = tema (konflik, kegagalan, kepemimpinan, deadline, belajar cepat, ambiguitas, kolaborasi, dampak). Tandai tema yang bisa dijawab tiap cerita. Pastikan setiap tema punya minimal dua cerita, supaya kalau satu sudah dipakai, kamu punya cadangan.

Sumber cerita: pekerjaan, freelance, proyek kampus, open source, organisasi, bahkan proyek portofolio.

    "Tell me about yourself"

Pakai pola Present - Past - Future sekitar 60-90 detik:

    Pertanyaan tentang kegagalan

Jangan memilih "kegagalan" palsu seperti "Saya terlalu perfeksionis". Pilih kesalahan nyata yang berdampak sedang (bukan bencana etika), akui tanggung jawabmu tanpa menyalahkan orang lain, jelaskan perbaikan yang kamu lakukan, dan tunjukkan perubahan kebiasaan sesudahnya.

    Pertanyaan balik ke interviewer

Di akhir interview hampir selalu ada "Do you have any questions for me?". Menjawab "No" memberi kesan kurang tertarik.

"I proposed the caching approach and implemented it" itu bukan sombong, itu informasi.

Contoh jawaban STAR untuk "Tell me about a time you made a mistake":

SITUATION: At TokoKita, I was responsible for a database migration that added
a new column to our orders table, which had about 3 million rows.

TASK: I needed to ship it during a normal weekday release without downtime.

ACTION: I tested the migration locally on a small dataset, and it ran in
seconds, so I didn't test it against production-sized data. In production,
it locked the table for about 4 minutes and checkout requests failed.
I noticed the error spike in our monitoring, told the on-call lead right away
in Slack, and we rolled back the release. Then I rewrote the migration to add
the column without a default value first and backfill in small batches.
I also wrote a short incident report explaining what I got wrong.

RESULT: The second migration ran with no downtime. The team adopted my
checklist: every migration on a large table now gets tested on a copy of
production-sized data. Since then, I always ask "what happens at 100x the
data?" before I ship a schema change.

Contoh "Tell me about yourself" (sekitar 70 detik):

I'm a frontend engineer based in Jakarta, and for the last two years I've
been at TokoKita, an e-commerce company with about 2 million monthly users.
My focus there is performance: most recently I cut checkout load time from
    4.1 to 1.6 seconds.

Before that, I built client websites at a small agency, which taught me to
ship fast and talk directly with non-technical clients.

I'm excited about this role because your team is rebuilding the dashboard
in Next.js, and performance at that scale is exactly the problem I enjoy.
I've also worked async with a US-based client before, so I'm comfortable
    with the time-zone setup.

Contoh dialog konflik (bagian Action yang spesifik):

Interviewer: Tell me about a time you disagreed with someone.
Candidate: Our designer wanted an animated hero video on the homepage.
I was worried it would hurt load time on mobile, which was most
of our traffic. Instead of arguing in Slack, I built two quick
versions and measured them: the video version took 5.2 seconds
to load on a mid-range phone versus 1.9 for a static image.
I shared the numbers and suggested a compromise: a static image
first, then load the video only on fast connections. She agreed,
and we shipped that. Later, she asked me to review performance
on her next designs early, which I took as a good sign.

    Kesalahan umum

    1. Jawaban terlalu pendek tanpa cerita. "I usually talk to them" bukan jawaban behavioral. Cara benar: ceritakan satu kejadian spesifik dengan STAR.
    2. "We" di sepanjang jawaban. Cara benar: jelaskan tindakan kamu sendiri dengan "I", sebut tim sebagai konteks.

    3. Menantang, Tulis jawaban STAR lengkap untuk "Tell me about a time requirements were unclear", lalu rekam dirimu menjawabnya. Targetkan 2 menit.
    Lihat solusi
    1. Situation, Task, Action, Result.

    2. Contoh pengecekan cakupan tema:

    Conflict : cerita #3, #8 ✔ (2 cerita)
    Failure : cerita #2, #8 ✔
    Deadline : cerita #1, #4 ✔
    Learn fast : cerita #4, #7 ✔
    Ambiguity : cerita #3, #6 ✔
    Leadership : cerita #1, #5, #7 ✔

    1. Contoh:
S: A product manager asked me to "make the dashboard faster" with no target.
T: I owned the dashboard frontend and needed a clear goal before starting.
A: I measured first: initial load was 6.2s with production data. I wrote a
short message restating the problem, asked whether the goal was initial
load or filter speed, and proposed a 2-second target. She confirmed
initial load. I profiled the API calls, found one query returning all
orders, added pagination, and moved the chart library to a lazy import.
R: Initial load dropped to 1.8s. I shared before/after numbers in the PR,
and now I always ask for a measurable target before performance work.
